Why does society accept hijacking the name Karen?

Women actually named Karen do not deserve to have their name degraded and dehumanized.

Karen used to be a respected, normal name — the kind of name you’d hear everywhere without a second thought. Then came the memes, the jokes, the viral videos. Teenagers made them, adults kept them alive. And somewhere along the way, Karen stopped being a name (to them) and started being a catchall insult for every woman people wanted to shame.

Now it’s out of control. No one even stops to think what they’re doing.

The latest example? The story of Ajike Owens and Susan Lorincz.
Susan — not Karen — shot and killed Ajike. Yet the internet calls her “Killer Karen.”

But she isn’t Karen. She is Susan.

No matter what she did before the murder, calling her “Karen” doesn’t hold her accountable — it erases her real name and drags innocent women into the mud with her.

What’s even more painful is that women actually named Karen are just as horrified by what Susan did. They’re just as disgusted by the viral videos, the racist rants, the entitled behavior that the internet loves to label as “Karen.”

So why are they the ones who have to sacrifice their name?
Why should they bear the shame for the bad behavior of strangers?

“Karen” doesn’t hurt the people it’s thrown at.
It hurts the women who are actually named Karen — women who once carried their name with pride, only to have that respect torn away and turned into mockery. A name that once stood for kindness and strength has been twisted into an insult, something used to shame other women. What was once simply a name is now treated as disposable — tossed aside like it no longer matters. And that’s not just unfair, it’s dehumanizing.

It’s time for people to stop and think:
Would you be okay if this happened to your name?

From “Phillies Karen” to “Brewers Karen,” it feels like people are just waiting for the next excuse to pick up their pitchforks. The irony couldn’t be clearer — the ones shouting “Karen” the loudest are acting just like what they claim to hate: rude, entitled, and over the top.

The “Karen” phenomenon isn’t accountability; it’s cruelty, hypocrisy, and mob behavior dressed up as humor.

It’s long past time people saw it for what it really is. The finger needs to point back at those who keep slinging “Karen” around — because mocking and name-calling isn’t virtue. It’s the very behavior they pretend to condemn.

Once again, just because we are standing up for the name Karen (on this particular page) does not mean we don't care about other injustices. Also, we do not want any other name to go through this.

It is 2025, names should be respected now and forever.

When you call someone a “Karen,” you’re not hurting the person who misbehaved — you’re hurting real women actually named Karen. The repetition of “Karen” as a “joke” has numbed society to the reality that it affects real women who live with the name.
